Okies First Endorses Cyndi Munson, Rejects Double Standard on Party Support
OKLAHOMA CITY — Okies First today reaffirmed its endorsement of Cyndi Munson for Governor of Oklahoma and responded to a circulating document that treats ordinary Democratic Party affiliation as a scandal.
Munson is the Democratic nominee for governor and former House Democratic Leader. In 2023 she was named to the board of the Democratic Legislative Campaign Committee, the official party committee dedicated to electing Democrats to state legislatures. Serving on that board is consistent with her role as a statewide Democratic leader. It is not evidence that she is controlled by outsiders, and it does not contradict her record of public service in Oklahoma.
“This write-up does not prove what it claims. Every major-party nominee has a national party. Munson’s is the Democratic Party. Mike Mazzei’s is the Republican Party. Pretending only one of those is a ‘machine’ is not an argument. It is a double standard.”
Mazzei is the Republican nominee. He is GOP-certified and was endorsed by Donald Trump. Republican donors, operatives, and national figures backed his campaign. That is party infrastructure. If a DLCC board seat or a legal contribution from a Democratic-aligned committee is disqualifying for Munson, then a presidential endorsement and the full Republican apparatus should be disqualifying for Mazzei.
The document also cites $10,000 from Democratic Action, including $5,000 on June 16 and $5,000 on August 7, and notes the group’s connection to the Democratic Governors Association. Campaigns accept lawful contributions. Mazzei loaned his campaign more than $11 million of his own money. Self-funding at that scale is not inherently more independent than raising from party-aligned sources.
References to CAIR-Oklahoma concern events, candidate-guide comments, and a 2018 award. Munson represented a district that included CAIR-Oklahoma’s headquarters and publicly discussed outreach to Muslim constituents. Meeting with community organizations and praising civic engagement is not, by itself, proof of disloyalty to Oklahoma.
Okies First endorsed Munson because the governor’s office should answer to working families, public schools, healthcare access, and local accountability—not to whichever candidate can most easily finance a campaign or redefine routine party politics as corruption when the other side does it.
